Shadow Heir by Richelle Mead

Genre:  Urban Fantasy
Dark Swan Series, Book 4

Description (taken from Richelle Mead's website):
Shaman-for-hire Eugenie Markham strives to keep the mortal realm safe from trespassing entities. But as the Thorn Land's prophecy-haunted queen, there's no refuge for her and her soon-to-be-born-children when a mysterious blight begins to devastate the Otherworld...

The spell-driven source of the blight isn't the only challenge to Eugenie's instincts. Fairy king Dorian is sacrificing everything to help, but Eugenie can't trust the synergy drawing them back together. The uneasy truce between her and her shape shifter ex-lover Kiyo is endangered by secrets he can't--or won't--reveal. And as a formidable force rises to also threaten the human world, Eugenie must use her own cursed fate as a weapon--and risk the ultimate sacrifice...

Aaaaaahhh!!!  I absolutely love the Dark Swan books!  And my only regret is that this was the last book.  Let me tell you that from the start of these books, I absolutely loved Dorian's character far better than Kiyo's.  And what's weird is both men deceived Eugenie a lot throughout the books.  But I still loved Dorian.

I had figured one big part of the plot from the very beginning of the book.  But most twists and turns in the story weren't revealed until right before they occurred.  And there's a few things that Eugenie did that I absolutely hated and can't imagine ever doing myself.  But I've come to realize that Richelle Mead doesn't make her characters perfect.  She makes them human and when put in sticky situations where there isn't necessarily a right or wrong answer, she can't make everyone happy by doing the 'right' thing.  Maybe she'll write another book for this series.  It was nice to see things wrap up well (not all of it wrapped up though), but I still think the story should continue...

Who would I recommend these books to?  Anyone who enjoys an adult urban fantasy read.  I would not recommend teenagers read it (because I don't think it's age appropriate).  If you like Richelle Mead's other books, then you'll most likely enjoy these books as well.
