Truth by Julia Karr

Genre:  YA Distopian
XVI Series, Book 2
Expected publication date:  January 19, 2012

Description (taken from Julia Karr's website):
Nina Oberon’s life has changed enormously in the last few months. When her mother was killed, Nina discovered the truth about her father, the leader of the Resistance. And now she sports the same Governing Council–ordered tattoo of XVI on her wrist that all sixteen-year-old girls have. The one that announces to the world that she is easy prey to predators. But Nina won’t be anyone’s stereotype. And when she joins an organization of girls work- ing within the Resistance, she knows that they can put an end to one of the most terrifying secret pro- grams the GC has ever conceived. Because the truth always comes out . . . and the consequences can be deadly.

This futuristic world that Nina lives in is easy enough to imagine.  Girls growing up thinking they should be wanting sex because they're of age.  Corrupt governments (okay, so it's not as corrupt as the one in the book).  I guess what I'm trying to get at is it's very easy to relate to the story and feel empathy for what's going on.

The story line is definitely intriguing and there's plenty of side stories to follow.  But the main story line isn't super huge.  It's like riding a roller coaster that's missing the main, big hill.  I enjoyed the new romance in the book (as little as it was) and guessing what was going to happen (I would say I figured it out 50% of the time).  This book kind of reaffirms that as much as we try to not make the same mistakes the people of our past made, we'll still make those mistakes.

Will I keep reading this series?  Yes.  The characters' stories make it worth it.  And I want to know what happens next...

A special shout out goes to Mindy from Magical Urban Fantasy for letting me participate in this ARC tour.  If you are interested in participating in one of her tours, check out her ARC Tour page.
